Our Story
Thomas Connolly is the oldest award winning traditional pub in Sligo town.
1780
There has been a pub on our site since 1780, opening onto Holborn Street. The Markievicz Road end was originally living quarters during this period.
1861
The pub was first licensed in 1861. There's a great account of Connolly's in the book The Irish Pub, by James Fennell and Turtle Bunbury. Thomas Connolly's storied past includes at least one visit from Charles Stewart Parnell during the pub's early days, plus Thomas Connolly himself becoming Mayor of Sligo in 1890 (the same year he acquired the premises).
The pub was established during a time of plentiful maritime trade; deliveries of rope, linen and tea came into Sligo on ships from all over Europe. A grocer’s shop was located at one end of the pub, popular for selling tea, sugar and bottling whiskey.
Today
These days, Connolly’s is best known for its warm welcome, its famous pint of stout, its relaxing atmosphere, its extensive whiskey selection and live music.
In the pub there’s an ever-growing Craft Beer, Whiskey and Gin collection. We’ll also happily prepare a freshly ground or specialty coffee of your choice.
